Years ago, baby sleep positioners used to be something on every expecting mothers baby registry. It’s common knowledge that the safest position for babies to sleep is on their backs. So you would think one of the best things that you could use to help baby sleep on their back would be something that keeps them in that position. But now many parents are asking, “Are Baby Sleep Positioners Dangerous?”
In 2010, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a warning on infant baby sleep positioners stating that they pose a safety risk. According to the FDA
Over the past 13 years, CPSC and the FDA have received 12 reports of infants between the ages of 1 month and 4 four months who died when they suffocated in sleep positioners or became trapped and suffocated between a sleep positioner and the side of a crib or bassinet.
So, according to the research done, infant baby sleep positioners are unnecessary and also potentially dangerous. While they were originally meant to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) the fact is that they do not. They actually increase the likelihood of your baby sleeping in the improper position.
Wedges are not the Same as Infant Baby Sleep Positioners
After these warnings by the government were issued, most manufacturers stopped producing sleep positioners. There is a good chance that you may come across them on some Chinese websites. However, do not for any reason buy one of these. It’s also best to NOT make your own positioner. It is unsafe to have anything extra than what your baby needs in the crib or bassinet. It is best to simply have a mattress and crib sheets in order to avoid a suffocation risk.
If you feel that you need to use something to help position your baby while he or she is sleeping, then you may want to consider a crib wedge. Crib wedges are perfectly safe to use in a crib. Why are crib wedges safe to use? Unlike baby sleep positioners, crib wedges are placed underneath the mattress to elevate it slightly. When would you use a crib wedge? The main reason to use a crib wedge is in order to reduce reflux or certain breathing issues. Before trying anything to position your baby please be sure to consult your doctor!
